What are some places around Old Town?
Places and Events in the ‘Hood by Kevin McCusker
I am relatively new to Albuquerque and am enjoying my explorations. Here are some places nearby that I have enjoyed. Most of us are trying to drive less, so I’m limiting my list to places within a couple miles of the Gardens. Also, note that I am not a professional food critic or music critic, I have no kickbacks or favors for my writings, and my comments are limited only to positive thoughts. Please add to this list if you have favorites! Kevin
Food and beverage:
West
Wine and classic cocktails. In the Sawmill district. Food is excellent and tapas size portions. French, Spanish, and continental influences. Live music on Fridays and Saturdays from 6-9. Solo jazz guitar by Dimi Disanti or Dan Dowling. Both players are excellent and the music volume is pleasantly subtle; you can enjoy their playing and still have conversation. Pluses: friendly and attentive but not overbearing, nice décor, positive energy of the Sawmill. Other hours 4-9 Wed-Saturday and Sunday brunch 11-4.
Flying Road Runner bakery
303 Romero St. Ste. 124
You can enter from either the Old Town side or through a door on Rio Grande. A small selection of pastries; the corn bread muffins with chili are nice! Good coffee, relaxed ambience, nice old building.
Monica’s el Portal
Casual dining of New Mexico and Mexican cuisine. Generous portions, very popular spot. Vegetarian and vegan options available.
Little Anita’s New Mexican Food
See description of Monica’s. Slightly more modern décor, popular spot with high turnaround. Good staff, tasty margaritas!
DH Lescombes Winery and Bistro
910 Rio Grande
Recently renovated, lovely décor. Nice staff. Menu of continental and French fare, family run winery and grapes from New Mexico vineyards.
Events (slightly more distance to travel):
UNM classical music students are in our neighborhood, I heard them perform with the UNM symphony at the Immanuel Presbyterian church.
